• International VDI conference on 22nd and 23rd June 2010 in Friedrichshafen, Germany
• Transmission concepts within the electromobility megatrend
• Special focus on machines
• Parallel event: 1st VDI ‘Transmissions in the commercial vehicle’ conference
(Duesseldorf, April 19, 2010) Sustainable driving, lower CO2 consumption, a paradigm shift towards electromobility: the automotive industry has some difficult demands to satisfy. Even modern transmission concepts are thus faced with entirely new challenges. Current trends and possibilities will be the subject of the international VDI conference ‘Transmissions in vehicles’ to be held by the VDI Wissensforum on 22nd and 23rd June 2010 in Friedrichshafen, Germany. Vehicle transmission developers and users will be gathering at this important industry meeting-point now in its tenth incarnation.
Conference director is Dr.-Ing. Hans-Joerg Domian, Director of New Products and Methods, Design Tasks, ZF Friedrichshafen AG. Opening papers tackle the subjects of the ‘Future of driveline development, potential CO2 savings and the rôle of electrification’ as well as ‘Electromobility: an outlook for industry’. The third paper, entitled ‘Evaluation of transmission concepts from the viewpoint of a racing driver’, will be delivered by ex-racing driver Hans-Joachim Stuck, representing the Volkswagen Group's motor sports division.
Alongside future-oriented transmission components for electric and hybrid vehicles, the program will also include current developments in the fields of double-clutch and automatic transmissions, manual transmissions and all-wheel drives, efficiency, components, materials and production engineering as well as clutches and operating strategies. The machines section is entirely new: here attendees can learn about, for example, technical trends in agricultural machines, new developments in construction machinery drives, infinitely variable power take-off drives or improvements in the ease of gearshifting.
As a new highlight, attendees may look forward to the live hands-on transmission demo. During presentation of the papers on ‘8HP70H: ZF's multihybrid transmission’ and on ‘Modular 7-gear dual-clutch transmissions as four-wheel drive version for a sports car of the highest performance class’ the corresponding transmissions will be in operation and filmed by a camera. Live pictures will be screened in large format in the auditorium, thus allowing the audience to closely follow what is being presented in the papers.
A technical exhibition will be held alongside the conference, concentrating for the first time on transmissions for commercial vehicles, buses and machines.
Also held in parallel is the 1st VDI ‘Transmissions in the commercial vehicle’ conference, which all transmission conference attendees can visit free of charge.

EUCOMAS 2010: 3rd European Conference on June 7th and 8th in Berlin
(Duesseldorf, 31/03/2010) The 3rd European Conference on Materials and Structures in Aerospace – EUCOMAS will take place on June 7th and 8th 2010 in Berlin, Germany. Organiser of the English-speaking conference is the VDI Wissensforum. In 2010 EUCOMAS will continue its success story in Berlin in the framework of the International Aerospace Exhibition ILA. Beside the technical presentations, important topics like the use of fibre reinforced plastics in aero engines, engineering with fibre reinforced ceramics and MRO for composite structures will be addressed.
There will be intensive discussion of new prospects and possible innovative solutions including some of the following subject highlights:
Energy
• Multifunctional fuel cell systems for aircraft applications
• Solar power generations for space applications
Bonding
• Rivetless aircraft assembly - a dream or a feasible concept?
• Techniques for joining composite stringers to shell: maturity of adhesive bonding
Space propulsion
• PTAH-SOCAR fuel-cooled ceramic composite material structure
• CMC design approach for cryogenic injector heads of rocket thrust chambers
Lightweight alloys
• New rivet type of sleeve-pin construction
• Development of friction-stir welded rib for joining wing to fuselage.
The concept of presenting the recent progress in technology, handling technical challenges in dedicated workshops and building networks has been greatly accepted. As a result of the workshops two new expert groups on “Computational Materials Engineering” and “Structural Bonding for Aerospace” have been founded in the framework of the German Association of Engineers VDI. These powerful industry-oriented groups, cooperating with important aerospace associations like the BDLI and DGLR, ensure the consequent development of the specific technologies addressed. And in addition, materials specialists of the new EU-countries are promoted to find their marketplace on the EUCOMAS platform.
