Historie

The further training of engineers, technical specialists and managers has tradition at the VDI. We have been involved in this field since the 1950s. Here you can take a look back at our history.

1957

Foundation of our first training institution for engineers: the VDI e.V. registers the “VDI-Bildungswerk GmbH” in the commercial register of Düsseldorf in October.

1968

Ten years after the first vocational training course, the VDI-Bildungswerk carries out 100 events with a total of nearly 6,000 participants.
Within the framework of the VDI conventions, the first trade exhibitions are taking place. Here, companies present their latest developments and products.

1986

Introduction of “executive seminars” that teach technical knowledge to senior managers. The first topics are “Software” and “Patents as instruments of company policy”.

1987

Meanwhile, the total offer includes 270 events from all areas of technology with approximately 10,000 participants.

1997

Introduction of in-house seminars: the company-internal seminars are tailored to the needs of the respective companies.

2001

It is renamed “VDI Wissensforum”. In addition, the range now also includes non-technical topics: management, leadership and social skills, as well as organisational methods, business administration and law.

2004

Spin-off of the VDI Wissensforum from the VDI e.V. as an independent, profit-orientated GmbH. In addition to training formats, the VDI Wissensforum now also organises the VDI-specialist conventions with exhibitions.

15.01.2004 until 28.02.2007

This phase saw the merging and bundling of all further training offers and the accompanying realignment of the VDI Wissensforum.

2004

Realignment according to individual topic areas. The VDI Wissensforum now serves almost all the technical disciplines.

2005

Positioning study “Employment market and further education requirements of engineers”. The VDI Wissensforum Advisory Board is established.

2006

The portfolio is extended to include sponsoring opportunities.

2007

After provisional management by Wolfgang Schröter, Timo Taubitz takes over the Management on 24.04.2007.

2008

Relocation from Graf-Recke-Straße to the newly built VDI building in the Airport-City Düsseldorf.

2009

Extension of the format range to include conferences as a meeting place and networking event for industrial companies on current topics.

2010

Introduction of the Professional Card – qualification of engineers in cooperation with the VDI e.V. development topic ‘resource efficiency’.

2011

Start of a new training concept in which engineers can undertake extra occupational training to become a certified “specialist engineer VDI”, beginning with the certificate course “Specialist Engineer Wind Energy Technology “.
Together, all VDI Wissensforum employees design and formulate the strategy and vision for 2015. The trainees of the VDI Wissensforum GmbH graduate as the best event managers in North Rhine-Westphalia.

2012

The VDI Wissensforum team has a lot of fun working on the new image film.
The VDI Wissensforum concludes a cooperation agreement with PME Familienservice for improved compatibility of work and Family.

2013

Set up of the new department “International Business Development”. First expert conferences are held at home and abroad.
Managing Director Timo Taubitz joins the initiative “CEOs pro recycling paper”.

2015

The Wissensforum supports earthquake victims in Nepal. New space for innovative ideas: modern interior design concepts are implemented in the VDI Wissensforum Lounge with a Think Tank.
Inauguration of the VDI electric charging station. The column was sponsored by the VDI congress ELIV.
VDI Wissensforum donates ten computers and five laptops to the comprehensive school Brüggen.

2016

When hurricane Matthew takes place in the Caribbean and causes considerable damage, VDI Wissensforum supports affected people with a generous donation. In addition, the new website is launched.

2017

The project 'Neue Arbeitswelten' (new working environments) is set off to a good start.
